I want to live without a computer

November 13, 2013 20 Comments

Grateful for sunlight this morning
So, I learned two things yesterday.

First, I want to live without a computer.  You know, like as a lifestyle.  I didn’t know this before.  It came up in one of the zillions of email/twitter/fb/instagram exchanges that were flying around following the launch of what shall from here on out be referred to as “the seminar” . . .  (no doubt I will have to talk about it now and again in the months ahead and the idea of typing out that whole freaking title makes my hair fall out).  And so ..

Second, the consensus is in.  Apparently, I am much more “me” in the blooper reel.

This was told to me many (many) times over the course of the day — things like “oh, there you are!” and “I didn’t recognize you until I saw the outtake video” and, from no less than my ex-husband who said, “it was kind of funny watching you try to do “serious”– good thing you had the blooper reel to let people see who you really are.”

ahem

She loves to greet the day by rolling on the ground no matter what the weather . Lucky for me today is a dry leaves morning
So I am goofy?  Nothing wrong with goofballs, am I right Miss DAY-Z?

It’s true.  I should’ve just not tried to be all formal like– but you know, live and learn.  Next time (<—ha hahah as if there will ever be a next time!) I will just roll around on the floor and eat rice krispie treats while I talk.

Let the real Elizabeth be seen, yes?

But you know what I loved most?  Was ladygenj’s surprise at my voice!

She expected something more “wild, gypsy, free” and hello— I could be mistaken for a five year old selling lemonade . ..  BUT it made me think ..  . how COOL would it be for me to try and modulate my voice?  Really set about and change my speaking voice the way you change your hair or go to the gym or whatever, right?

Wouldn’t it be FUN to be able to talk like Patricia Clarkson?  (I LOVE her voice!)  And of course the QUEEN of “honey-whiskey”  Blythe Danner yeah, I could go with either of those.

Now, back to life without a computer.  I did not know this.  I did not have this vision.
And, now I do.

Oh my —– it’s gonna happen.  It can’t happen as long as Squam is my livelihood .. .  but one day.  I can see it now– and people, I am so damn excited.  I am really (truly) tired of the computer.  Don’t misunderstand.  It has been amazing.  It has changed my life.  It has linked me to people from all over the world, from all walks of life— it has brought amazing information to me.

And let’s not forget youtube.  C’mon now– that alone is reason enough to love the computer.

But I am done.  The end is near . .. .  and this?  This is a new vision.

Perfect, and why I continue to use my dumbphone. Much as I would love a smartphone for the photo taking, I do not want to be constantly connected in that way. In the meantime, trying to do more phone calls or visits than texts or emails. (And why I struggle with blogging and all the rest of it!) Lately, if I showed you the pages from my blog and journal, someone would think one of us is shadowing the other. BTW, saw you in Natalie's “neighborhood” this morn when I popped over to check her latest. 😉

Brave, beautiful you! I can't imagine being without a computer or a smartphone. The computer has provided my livelihood for the past three decades. But in the early days, it was impossible to take it home with me (it was mainframe). When you first wrote that you saw your life without a computer, I was thinking “But wait! How are we going to communicate?” Then I realized…old-fashioned pen and paper. And that feels much more civilized than banging out an email or a text message. You might have a made a convert!

I'm so glad you got what I meant—I hesitated before posting because I was worried it would sound super weird (and potentially offensive).

    *whew*

Anyway, I'm glad I now have the whole picture of Ms. Duvivier (well, at least as much as you can get from 2-D) so I can have a proper voice in my head reading your words every time I pop over here or to the squam blog.

And if you do ever go completely off the grid, we'll have to meet for a walk with the pooch/es (hoping at some point I'll have one again) and a knit and a cup of something warm and soothing. Yes? Yes.

PS. I've had to try and change my voice and it is NOT easy. Well, not change the sound of my voice, but the speed. I talk really super ridiculously fast and I had to make a conscious, disciplined effort to slooooowwww it down as I knew it was tough for people I worked with to get me (friends and family “speak” J. New people? not so much). Sigh. It is not easy. Although I suppose my issue was not as fun/interesting of a thing to change.

But a glass of wine helps. 🙂

    (Although whiskey in your case).

Okaaaaay, but don't ditch the camera or INSTAGRAM! 😉 I just adore written letters…who doesn't love to get lush, rich handwritten prose that travelled from afar through the actual world to land on your doorstep?! Count me in! Oh and I may have just squealed with delight at the tire swing pic…so fun and that light?! Gorge! xoxox K. Hotchkiss

Whoa Nellie. Let's not go off that deep end there. The computer = good. It is where all of this amazing stuff happens. I know that my computer life is fairly limited, I don't really do facebook accept to quickly read the posts when I can, and I only really have a few (less than 10?) blogs that I read with any regularity. So, I can leave the computer at times. But ALL TOGETHER QUIT? I missed you so when you stopped blogging for a while, I am pouting right now. (By the way….Liz nailed this comment stream.)
